Each Labor Day weekend marks the return of Southern Decadence the largest gay event in New Orleans. The deep south's annual event was called off last year because of Hurricane Katrina. But this year the party was back in full-swing in the French Quarter. Event organizers said 75,000 attended, about two-thirds of the normal crowds showed up this year. The annual festival is expected to bring a much-needed boost to the local economy at the beginning of the tourist season.

Southern Decadence XXXV Grand Marshal this year were again Led by 2005 Southern Decadence Grand Marshals XXXIII Lisa Beaumann and Regina Adams.

Southern Decadence Grand Marshals [SDGM] XXXIII, Lisa Beaumann and Regina Adams, reign came to an abrupt end in 2005 when Southern Decadence XXXIV was cancelled due to Hurricane Katrina for the first time in the history of the celebration. Beaumann and Adams will continue to reign as SDGMs XXXIII in 2006, the first time grand marshals will reign twice. Labor Day Weekend Tradition Continues: Southern Decadence 2007

The third largest holiday festival in New Orleans.

Southern Decadence started thirty-five years ago as a simple going-away party. As a top gay Labor Day Weekend destination, it has evolved into one of our world's major annual events. One of the largest annual celebrations in New Orleans, it has become known as the "New Orleans Gay Mardi Gras." People begin to arrive on the Wednesday before Labor Day, and generally don't even think about stopping or going home until the following Tuesday. With over 100,000 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender participants, the economic impact on the city was estimated to be in excess of $95 million post hurricane Katrina. The city has recognized its importance with an Official Proclamation to welcome the event.

The corner of Bourbon and St. Ann Streets is generally considered to be the epicenter of Gay New Orleans, and even more so during the Southern Decadence festival weekend. At that intersection is the largest gay nightclub, The Bourbon Pub video bar and The Parade dance club, which is home to the hottest dancers in town. Across the street is Hit Parade Gift and Clothing store. Most of the city's main gay attractions are located within a few blocks of this intersection.

Most street party activities take place in the immediate area of the French Quarter, and the dance parties are in the clubs. And since the gay bars never close, there is something happening around the clock. Some of the nation's best DJs work the crowds into a frenzy. For 2006, the DJ lineup includes Joe Gauthreaux, Max Rodriguez, Randy Bettis, Lydia Prim, Rick Mitchell,

During Southern Decadence, some streets of the French Quarter do not allow parking - look for, and heed, no parking signs. Plan on doing a lot of walking. Comfortable shoes are a must. Always walk where it is well lit and there are a lot of people. New Orleans is a city of neighborhoods. Like all large cities, the Big Easy does have some trouble spots. Always walk with others, never alone if possible. Don't wander about the city. In New Orleans the neighborhoods can change, literally, when you cross a street. Always carry a map. If you're drinking, don't go stumbling about the French Quarter. Locals know that the people who encounter trouble are usually the ones who have been drinking.

Bars in New Orleans are open twenty-four hours a day. Pace yourself. Most important, it's easy to get caught up in all the excitement and forget to eat. If you want to make it through the weekend, solid food is a necessity. Of course, New Orleans is world famous for its food and indulging in sheer Decadence is part of a great and exciting complete Gay New Orleans experience.

A Southern Decadence Weekend Pass is recommended and will save you money and allow you to avoid general admission lines.
